Prolong your laptop’s battery life with these top tips!
Travelling and working on your laptop can be pretty difficult if your battery isn’t dependable. You could be working at a coffee shop or trying to get work done at home during loadshedding. Regardless of what you are up to, you need your laptop’s battery to be reliable!
There is nothing worse than working away without a worry in the world, to suddenly looking down and realising your laptop is about to die on you. If you are on the move or somewhere you can’t charge your battery, you are in a pickle. This blog discusses how we can help avoid these stressful situations by keeping in mind your battery and what affects it.
Here are our ultimate tips to help your laptop battery last longer.
1 – Check your screen brightness
A sizeable chunk of what consumes your battery is the display screen of your laptop. The higher the brightness of your screen, the more your battery will be drained. You can adjust your screen’s brightness in the display settings to eliminate this battery-draining source.
2 – Turn off the keyboard backlight
If your laptop has a keyboard with backlighting, this could be draining your battery unnecessarily. Your keyboard backlight is only necessary if you are in a dimly lit room, or you are using your laptop to game. You can turn this feature off on the relevant button on the keyboard or in the settings.
3 – Adjust laptop power settings
Every laptop has a power setting where you can adjust how your device optimises the battery. The battery-saver option is the best for conserving your battery as it automatically adjusts your laptop’s performance, pauses downloads and dims your screen brightness. Your laptop will still be very functional, and your battery will last longer compared to using other options.
4 – End unnecessary background apps/programs
While you are busy, there may be needless apps working or being downloaded in the background. To save battery life, make sure there aren’t any unnecessary apps running. You can go to your settings to see what apps have access and what apps are operating behind the scenes. Adjust these settings to conserve battery life and help your laptop run smoother.
5 – Close unneeded processes
Your laptop may be executing unwanted processes in the background that is unnoticeable to you. You can see what processes are running by going to the task manager and ending unwanted tasks you do not need.
6 – Turn on airplane mode
Turning on airplane mode will stop certain actions you may not be aware of. Notifications and downloading updates will stop as there is no connection to a network, and this will help to prolong your battery’s lifespan. If you need to use WIFI while you work, turning flight mode on won’t work for you as it disconnects you from all connections.
7 – Keep your laptop ventilated and have enough airflow to keep it cool.
A build-up of heat from your laptop working hard will be the death of your laptop battery. Your laptop will struggle to function, and your battery will be negatively affected if there isn’t enough ventilation or the airflow is blocked. Using your laptop on pillows or blankets is a bad idea as this prohibits airflow. These objects retain heat, which will then overheat your laptop. Use your device instead on firm surfaces, preferably with a laptop stand to keep your battery healthy and lasting longer.
8 – Use a backup battery
We suggest using a backup battery if you are going to be away from a charging port and have to use your laptop for an extended period. These batteries can be charged ahead of time and are portable. You won’t have to worry about your laptop dying on you with one of these. Just plug it in and carry on!
After implementing these tips, you should notice that your laptop’s battery lasts longer. If your battery is still depleting rapidly after adjusting your settings, it may have reached the end of its lifespan. Unfortunately, laptop batteries degrade over time. You may need to replace it if you have owned your laptop for a long time or if you work all day on your device.
