It’s 9:14am. You’ve got a client call in sixteen minutes, an invoice that needs to go out before month-end, and a new hire starting on Monday who still doesn’t have a laptop. And you’re under your desk, unplugging and replugging a router, because the internet’s gone down again and nobody else in the office knows where the “reset” button even is.

Sound familiar?

If you run a business with anywhere between five and thirty people, there’s a good chance you’ve been that person. Not because you’re bad at your job – because somewhere along the way, “figure out the IT” quietly became part of your job description, and nobody ever asked if you wanted it.

The job you never applied for

Nobody starts a business because they love managing IT. You started it because you’re good at what you actually do – running a clinic, building a supply chain, growing an agency, keeping a factory floor moving. IT was supposed to be a tool that helped you do that. Instead, for a lot of growing businesses, it becomes a second job that nobody’s trained for and nobody has time to do properly.

And it rarely shows up as one big disaster. It shows up as a thousand small ones. The printer that only works if you restart it in a specific order. The laptop that takes eleven minutes to open Outlook. The password nobody can remember because the person who set it up left the company two years ago. None of it is catastrophic on its own. All of it adds up to hours of lost focus, every single week, spent on things that have nothing to do with why your business exists.

The “guy” problem

Most businesses in this size bracket don’t have no IT support – they have scattered IT support. There’s the guy who set up the network three years ago and still answers WhatsApp messages sometimes. There’s the company that does the printers. There’s whoever’s nephew is “good with computers.” There’s the cloud software vendor who insists any problem is someone else’s fault.

Everyone’s responsible for a slice. Nobody’s responsible for the whole thing. So the moment something breaks that touches more than one slice – say, the Wi-Fi is down and the phones run over it and your point-of-sale system needs the internet to process a sale – you’re not calling an IT partner. You’re running a small investigation, trying to work out who to call first.

That’s not an IT problem. That’s an accountability problem. And it’s the single biggest reason growing businesses lose time, money, and patience to technology that’s supposed to be helping them.

The size that gets forgotten

Here’s the uncomfortable truth about the IT industry: it’s built for the extremes. There’s a whole ecosystem for solo operators and micro-businesses who can survive on a laptop and good luck. And there’s a whole ecosystem for large corporates who can afford a CIO, an internal IT department, and a procurement process for buying a mouse.

Businesses with five to thirty people fall into the gap. You’re big enough that IT genuinely matters – you’ve got client data, financial systems, remote staff, compliance requirements, a reputation to protect. But you’re not big enough to justify hiring a full internal IT team, with all the salaries, management, and sick leave that comes with it. So you end up patching the gap yourself, with whatever combination of part-time help and goodwill you can find.

That gap is exactly where things go wrong. Security gets overlooked because nobody owns it. Backups don’t get checked because nobody’s job is to check them. Systems age quietly until one day something fails at the worst possible moment – usually a Monday, usually right before something important.

What “one team” actually changes

This is the part that’s easy to underestimate until you’ve experienced it: the difference between having access to IT support and having a team that’s actually accountable for your IT isn’t a small upgrade. It’s a completely different way of running your business.

When one team owns your entire IT environment – your network, your security, your devices, your support – problems get caught before they become disasters, not after. You get one number to call, not four. You get people who already know your setup, your systems, and your history, instead of explaining your entire office from scratch every time something breaks. And critically, you get to go back to actually running your business, because the technology stops needing to be your problem.

That’s not a luxury reserved for big companies with big IT budgets. It’s exactly what a business with fifteen or twenty people needs – arguably more than a giant corporate does, because you don’t have the internal slack to absorb a bad week of downtime.

The real question to ask yourself

Forget “is our IT working right now.” That’s the wrong question, because it’s only ever true until it isn’t. The real question is: if something broke tomorrow – really broke – who is accountable for fixing it, and how fast would they actually respond?

If you can’t answer that in one sentence, with one name or one team, that’s worth fixing. Not because your current setup is doomed. Because you’re running a business that deserves better than “we’ll figure it out.”
